Polarbrød in Älvsbyn in Sweden fires all factory employees after the fire. Delivery to Norway will be affected.

– The management has examined all the possibilities, but does not find another solution at this time because the construction of a new bakery will take a long time, at least two years, writes CEO Karin Bodin in a press release.

– This is a sad day for us in Polarbrød. We don’t see any other solutions at the moment, but we are doing our best to come back with a new bakery in Älvsbyn, even if it will take time, he says.

The delivery of polar bread to Norway will be affected by the fire.

– The breads going to Norway are mainly from the factory that has now been burned, General Manager Jarle Findal tells Børsen.

The company is now working to find alternative solutions for its employees:

– Initially Polarbrød offers jobs at the company’s second bakery in Bredbyn, where it needs bakery staff. They are about 20 people. Polarbrød will try to help with accommodation and travel.

The company also understands those who do not want to travel the 400 kilometers to Bredbyn to get a new job:

– Also, they work hard to start sandwich production in Älvsbyn. Basically, it can be about 20 people. Furthermore, Polarbrød collaborates with the municipality and the employment service to develop one or another targeted education in the hometown.

The Polar bread factory was completely damaged in a fire on the night of Monday, August 24. No one was injured in the fire, but there was heavy smoke over the city on Monday and everyone nearby was asked to stay inside and close windows, doors and vents.

According to the Swedish newspaper NSD, the company first stated that the fire started in a piece of dough on a conveyor belt, but just over a week later the company withdrew from the statement:

– Right now there is no evidence of what in the media has now become a kind of truth, that it was a piece of dough that caught fire and caused the fire. I think everyone can understand that it was an incredibly stressful situation right after the fire. So it was a guess. That’s what we can say, says Anders Johansson, CEO of Polarbrød, to NSD.

According to him, there are several parallel investigations underway now:

– We are working on ours, the insurance company is doing its thing and the fire department and police are also conducting an investigation. We believe that it is important that the investigation is launched, says Johansson.
