NRK meets the Malgorzata and Janusz Nowak couple at the largest cemetery in Warsaw. The couple recently lost their son in a tragic traffic jam.
As it is no longer allowed to enter the cemetery, they light a candle on the door and say a silent prayer.
– It is very difficult to think that there is the grave of our area. We don’t understand these rules, Malgorzata told NRK.
Close the cemeteries
Poland is hit hard by the crown. And the government is closing cemeteries across the country to prevent infection.
In the last 24 hours, there were 21,897 new cases of infection and 280 deaths. The situation is about to spiral out of control.
At the same time, All Saints’ Day is an important holiday in Poland. Usually the vast majority of Polish families will visit the cemetery and decorate the graves of their deceased loved ones.
Florists are desperate
For successful cemetery flower sellers, closure spells financial ruin, tell NRK.
– We have been waiting a long time for this day and it usually gives us income that we can live on for half a year. The next chance to make money is at Easter, but no one yet knows what the situation will be like then, florist Krysztof Ruslin told NRK.
The Polish military police are now patrolling the cemetery, no one is allowed in.
– Cemeteries were not even closed during communism.
Damian Mrugalski is a monk and pastor of the Dominican Church in Warsaw. Explain that visiting graves on All Hallows’ Eve is a very important tradition in Poland.
“Even during communism they didn’t close the cemeteries,” he told NRK.
Mrugalski says that he tries to comfort people who come to church by praying with them and performing the ritual that would normally take place in a grave.
Build field hospital
The Polish army is now building a large field hospital at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
The field hospital will have a capacity of 1,200 beds and there will be 90 ventilators and 160 heart monitors. A large oxygen tank has been installed on the soccer field and 5 kilometers of pipes have been used to connect the hospital beds to an oxygen network.
Last week they had to close restaurants and bars. Gatherings of more than five people are prohibited and everyone must wear a mask both on and off the street.
