At around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Madsen took a prison psychologist hostage in connection with the escape attempt, said Danish prison association leader Bo Yde Sørensen. Madsen was carrying an object that resembled a bomb belt and an object that resembled a pistol, Danish police said Tuesday.
During the escape attempt, Madsen is said to have used the hostage as a shield while allegedly threatening prison staff to open the door.
The prison sounded the alarm at 10:21 and Madsen was arrested by the police at 10:26 not far from the prison. Around 10:23, Madsen was caught on a surveillance camera, which shows the lifeguard passing through a parking lot wearing a black jacket, blue pants and a backpack on his back. Madsen was then only a few hundred meters from the prison.
The arrest
During the escape attempt, Madsen got into a white van, where he was detained by police. However, Madsen was thrown out of the truck and sat on the side of the road after police noticed the bomb-like object that was attached to his body.
This triggered a major police operation involving both the bomb squad and special police forces. About three hours after the alarm sounded, Madsen was transported away from the scene.
Madsen has been charged with attempted escape under article 124 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to two years. On Wednesday morning, Madsen will be brought before the Danish courts in Glostrup, says Danish police, who do not want to comment on the case until after the court hearing.
The police will also question the driver of the white van, despite the fact that there is nothing to indicate that the person in question had knowledge of Madsen.
Stressful
The prison director, Hanne Høegh Rasmussen, emphasized that the incident has been stressful for the employees who participated in the escape attempt.
Madsen is serving a life sentence after being found guilty of the brutal murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall. Wall was invited to Madsen’s submarine to write a report on the inventor before she was killed and mutilated.
Dagbladet has tried to contact Madsen’s attorney, Betina Hald Engmark, without success. Dagbladet has also been in contact with Madsen’s wife, Jenny Curpen, who declined to comment on the incident.
