Peter Madsen: – Escaped from prison

On Tuesday morning, several Danish media reported that Peter Madsen, who has been convicted of the brutal murder of journalist Kim Wall, has escaped from Albertslund prison.

Several photos have been taken in which Madsen is apparently sitting by a hedge outside the prison. Police now claim that Madsen is charged with attempted escape.

The president of the Danish prison association, Bo Yde Sørensen, confirms that Madsen took the prison psychologist hostage during the escape. It is said that he used the clerk as a shield to threaten staff to open the door, writes Danish BT.

– The weapon was real, so the jailers at the door did not dare to take any risk in relation to the hostage, who they considered in danger of death, so they chose to free him from the door. It is a decision that I support. We shouldn’t risk getting anyone killed and then we have to find that person, he says.

Madsen, convicted of murder, thus manages to get out of jail. Shortly after, around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the prison raised the alarm.

No one at the prison has been physically injured, but the prison director, Hanne Høegh Rasmussen, emphasizes that there has been a mental strain for the employees who have been involved.

Running away for five minutes

During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Police Inspector Mogens Lauridsen explains that Madsen was on the run for five minutes.

– At 10:21 we received a report that he has fled. We sent the entire crew to the area, and at 10:26 one of our patrols managed to stop him.

Madsen is said to have remained about 400-500 meters from Herstedvester Prison, where he is serving a life sentence, when police surrounded him.

At the press conference, Lauridsen explained that Madsen was arrested while getting into a white van.

However, the police do not want to comment on who the driver is, or what will happen to the person in question at this time. But Lauridsen confirms that he does not speak Danish and that there have therefore been linguistic challenges in connection with the interrogation.

When asked if Madsen has received help from others, he responds:

– We do not suspect that you have received help, but of course it is something we are investigating.

Bomb threat

A large police operation was started in connection with the escape attempt. During the arrest, the police realize what looks like a weapon. Danish media also reported that Madsen allegedly threatened to carry a bomb. Therefore, the police were present with both bomb squads and special forces.

The police declared at 1:00 p.m. that the operation ended and that the detained person was expelled from the place. Lauridsen says the reason Madsen stayed on the grass for a long time is that the police had to investigate whether he was carrying a bomb.

– Peter Madsen was wearing something resembling a bomb belt when the police surrounded him. We handcuffed him and then investigated whether or not it was a belt bomb, he says.

Neither the experts nor the explosive dogs found any evidence of explosives.

Madsen is said to have been isolated previously due to suspected escape plans. Neither the police nor the prison can explain at this time how such a leak can occur, but the prison emphasizes that they will examine their security routines.

Brutal murder

It was in 2017 that Swedish journalist Kim Wall was invited to Madsen’s submarine to do a report on him. However, Wall never returned from this trip and was later found split on the seabed.

During the trial, Madsen denied the murder, but has not yet appealed the question of guilt. In September of this year, however, Madse admits to Wall’s murder for the first time. It happens in the television program “The Secret Discoveries with Peter Madsen”, which is made by Discovery Networks Denmark for the streaming service Dplay.

In 2018, Madsen was sentenced to life in prison. According to the Danish Republic, prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment are usually released after serving between 16 and 17 years.

It is currently unclear what happens next to the convicted murderer. Police say he is in custody and will be questioned in the near future. The national president of the Danish Prison and Probation Service, John Hatting, does not believe that Madsen will be transferred back to Herstedsvester prison immediately.

– My immediate assessment is that it will take a long time, that is, several years, if it happens, he tells BT.

Madsen’s attorney, Betina Hald Engmark, did not know about the case when contacted by BT Dagbladet has also tried to obtain a comment from Engmark, without success.

Dagbladet has been in contact with Madsen’s wife, Jenny Curpen, who does not want to comment on the incident.

So far, Kim Wall’s family has not commented on the incident.
