News agencies AP and Reuters received confirmation Tuesday night from sources that Buttigieg had been elected transportation minister in the incoming Biden government. CNN and other outlets also reported that Buttigieg was in the best position in the battle for the minister post.

The Department of Transportation is responsible, among other things, for America’s highways, planes, and trains. The ministry is expected to play an important role in the Biden administration’s efforts to lift the United States out of the economic crisis in the wake of the corona pandemic.
Biden says in a statement that Buttigieg is a “patriot and problem solver who represents the best of who we are as a nation.”
– I appointed him Minister of Transportation because this position unites many of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, says Biden.
“Employment, infrastructure, equality and the climate are part of the Ministry of Transport, which is responsible for some of our most ambitious plans to build a better future,” continued the incoming president.

Joe Biden has previously compared Buttigieg to his late son Beau.
– It’s the highest compliment I can give a person. And like Beau, he has a spine of iron, Biden said at an election rally with the 38-year-old earlier this year.
With Buttigieg as minister, the United States will also have a Norwegian-speaking transportation minister.
Buttigieg, who became known in the United States as Mayor Pete after serving for eight years from 2012 to 2020, was mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He learned Norwegian, among other things, to read Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Sigrid Undset and Knut Hamsun.
