– People were completely inconsiderate – NRK

It was full blast when the remnants of Tropical Storm “Sally” swept across northern Norway.

There were waves of up to 12 meters high, 80 millimeters of rain and hurricane gusts.

One of those who came out to experience the storm up close Monday afternoon was amateur photographer Steinar, who only wants to use his first name.

He says he has a great respect for storms and kept a safe distance when high waves hit the pier.

Not everyone did.

Small children

– I observed mothers and fathers renting small children. Others brought reluctant dogs with them. I also saw a group of 13-14 year old boys running around. They got very wet.

He seems very concerned about people’s behavior.

– The worst were young children. And also the dogs, who resisted. But people just dragged them after them. It hurts.

He saw a couple being carried away by a wave that broke and he had to endure.

Steinar was surprised when he saw a car approaching the dock. A powerful wave hits the car several times.

– The waves that passed over the car speak of the conditions. How dangerous it can be. The police should impose a traffic ban. They were thoughtless, he tells NRK.

He himself is from outside of Lofoten and an avid boat user.

– I have great respect for the sea. I also have a good sea ship, and I would not like to go out in this weather.

Police: – Potentially dangerous

Kai Henrik Eriksen, Director of Operations for the Nordland Police District

– Visiting places exposed to the elements can be dangerous. Be careful and use common sense, advises Operations Manager Kai Eriksen in the Nordland Police District.

Nordland Police have received several reports of people visiting areas exposed to the elements. NRK has shown Steinar’s video to police.

Operations manager Kai Eriksen says police strongly discourage the public from searching for the pier in Bodø when the wind is as strong as it is today.

– Traffic in places exposed to the elements can quickly become dangerous. Such strong waves can carry objects that can harm people, animals and vehicles.

Eriksen says the police would rather not close the pier for free movement, but rather appeal to the common sense of the people.

– But next time we will have to consider that it makes more sense to block the pier, he says.

Hurricane in the molds

There have been hurricanes in the molds in various places on the Nordland coast on Monday. Especially around Vestfjord and Lofoten.

Most of the time it was windy in Rotvær, near Lødingen. In the middle of the day at 12 o’clock it blew 37.1 meters per second.

But mostly it has blown on the mountain. Up to 49 meters per second were measured at Kvaløyfjellet in Sømna in Helgeland, according to Værvarslinga for Northern Norway.
