362 patients who have been admitted with covid-19 in Norwegian hospitals have responded to a questionnaire after admission. The data, collected by the Norwegian Intensive Care Unit and Pandemic Registry, have not yet been corrected for sex or age.
147 previous patients respond that they are more tired than before the disease. 46 responded that they are much more tired.
– It is a finding that is important to investigate further. One of our most important tasks going forward is to deliver results to research communities, Eirik Buanes, who is the head of the registry, said in a digital webinar on Tuesday.
Big differences in the intensive care unit
As of early October, 247 corona patients had been admitted to intensive care and the average age was 62. 47 of the intensive care patients died, representing a proportion of 19 percent.
The median respiratory time for COVID patients was twelve days, that is, half of them were on the ventilator for less than twelve days, while half were more than twelve days.
Compared to intensive care patients in general, the median respiratory time is only two days. The death rate in ordinary intensive care patients is 10 percent, while for Covid-19 patients the death rate is double, 20 percent.
– The contrast in patients with covid-19 in intensive care is surprising. They stay on the ventilator much longer than normal intensive care patients and the death rate is slightly higher, says Buanes.
– It says something about this being a group of patients who are sick, with bad breath, and are there for a long time, he says.
It expanded in haste
The Norwegian intensive care registry has existed since 1998. In March, the Ministry of Health commissioned the registry to expand it to also include patients with COVID-19.
– There were short deadlines and we did not have things ready, says Buanes, who on Tuesday presented a series of different figures and summaries that the registry has compiled since March.
As of last week, a total of 1,127 Covid-19 patients had been discharged from Norwegian hospitals since the pandemic began. Hospitalized patients were hospitalized for an average of ten days and the average age of the patients was 59 years. More than half had one or more risk factors.
81 hospitalized patients have died, representing a proportion of 7.2% of hospitalized patients.
