Just over a week before the most special celebration of May 17 in recent memory, it has yet to be officially determined whether the royal family will arrive on the castle balcony.
Since 1906, this tradition has only been broken six times.
It is only the five years of war from 1940 to 1944 and in 1910 that the royal family did not greet people from their own balcony. On May 17, 1910, King Haakon and his family in England attended the funeral of King Edward Edward I’s father-in-law.
Not quite done
– The program is not completely finished by the castle. The path will be sufficient as they go, the May 17 committee leader in Oslo, Pia Farstad von Hall, told Dagbladet on Friday. And just this day, May 8, the 75th anniversary of the liberation has been the focus.
However, what is clear for the May 17 celebration in Oslo is that there will be none of the children’s trains in Karl Johan, nor any traditional folk festivals in Slottsplassen under the royal family.
There are no bodies on Karl Johan
In the street of the Karl Johan parade there will also be no music band or any other event.
Chief of Staff Harald Nilssen of the Oslo Police District is responsible for the police service on National Day in the capital.
– Our job is to ensure a safe and dignified celebration on May 17 within the clear infection control rules that apply. For those in the center, it is possible to walk or cross Karl Johan.
– We hope the audience will follow up on the clear request to add the celebration to the home or local setting, says Dagbladet’s chief of staff.
On the security plan for Slottsplassen, the police are waiting for the final message of what kind of event will be from the Castle.
Vålerenga students at the Storting
Another tradition will also be different this time. The Storting president does not go out onto the Storting balcony towards Karl Johan to greet the children’s train that is not there.
– Now, on Monday, there will be a film session for the two students from the Vålerenga school to meet with the president of Storting, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen, and the chairman of the May 17 committee in front of and inside the Storting. Later it will be published in the media, says Pia Farstad von Hall.
Vålerenga school was going to go first on the children’s train this year.
