The trawler arrived at Skoltegrunnskaien on the outskirts of Bryggen in Bergen around 3pm on Sunday, because there was a suspicion of infection on board.

The entire crew of a total of 34 people was tested for the coronavirus.

18 people tested positive, while 16 people tested negative for the coronavirus.

One of the people on board is dead, the Bergen municipality said in a press release.

– He did not die in the port of Bergen.

It is not clear when the infected person died.

– I don’t know when the person died, but he did not die in the port of Bergen, writes communications manager Astrid Tomassen in Bergen in an SMS.

The trawl has its home port in Murmansk, but it was heading towards the Norwegian coast towards Ålesund.

Because the port of Bergen has been designated a “pandemic port”, the trawler was asked to dock there. The evaluation was done in consultation with the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

– We were notified that there was a suspicion of infection on board on Saturday night. At the same time, we received a tip that someone might have died on board, says director Johnny Breivik in the port of Bergen.

Isolated on board

They then alerted the police and health authorities, who were ready when the network was robbed. The crew was tested on Sunday afternoon.

The crew has not been ashore. Therefore, it is unlikely that they have spread the infection in Bergen.

– Those infected are isolated on board the ship. Infection control authorities are responsible for monitoring them, says communications manager Astrid Tomassen at the port of Bergen.

Health authorities in the Bergen municipality held meetings about the ship on Monday morning.

It was Bergens Tidende who first mentioned the outbreak.

Being housed in quarantine hotels

Those who test negative will be transferred to a quarantine hotel in Flesland on Monday afternoon.

– It is a challenge that they only speak Russian. An interpreter is needed, says Breivik.

The crew will be monitored daily in the future. The ship will remain in the port of Bergen until the crew is healthy and without isolation.

According to the MarineTraffic boat monitoring service, the trawler left Kirkenes on November 27. The ship must have fished off the Norwegian coast during the period, according to Tomassen.
