The iceberg is 5,800 square kilometers, which is the size of the old Akershus county.

Researchers now fear that the iceberg could crash into the island of South Georgia, potentially threatening diverse wildlife. Among other things, the island is home to various species of penguins, seals, and birds.

Geraint Tarling, a professor at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), says icebergs can prevent animal species from accessing their normal foraging areas.

“If they have to take big detours around the iceberg to make the same trip that they would normally take, they probably won’t be back in time to feed their children,” Tarling told CNN.

At a speed of one kilometer per hour, the iceberg is now just over 300 kilometers from the island. The researchers now hope that ocean currents will guide the iceberg in a different direction.

The iceberg, which has been named A-68A, broke away from the northwestern part of Antarctica in 2017.
