– When the notification period ends, we have a room without nurses day and night.
This is what Acting Section Leader in Tromsø Municipality says Roar Evjen. Six nurses have resigned from the same department at the Health Center at the same time.
The management will close the ward temporarily as it is not justified to operate without nurses.
There are no vacancies for vacancies.
– Helsehuset has had problems with hiring from the beginning, Evjen tells NRK.
It was the Tromsø newspaper that first mentioned the case.
The Tromsø Health Center receives patients who need treatment before or after hospitalization. Since the inauguration, there have been reports of inhumane conditions in the workplace.
NRK employees have spoken to believe that no reports of non-compliance have been heard. They say that work pressure has been too high for a long time.
Employees have reported several hundred deviations and believe that management does not take their deviations seriously.
– There have been a number of reports of non-compliance. Have you taken them seriously enough?
– I would say that we have taken the non-conformity reports seriously. We have a system that we believe works. We depend on people to write deviations so we can improve, says Evjen.
– Why haven’t you been able to hire more nurses?
– The pandemic has challenged us a lot lately, in fact since March. We are very tired, because there has been a lot to do for health and care in the municipality of Tromsø, he says.
Even if the ward is closed, Evjen believes Helsehuset’s patients won’t notice.
– We reassigned the places in the Health Center to be able to attend to the patients who are there. During the first part of 2021, we will rebuild the department.

– Serious warning
Gunhild Johansen (Sv) is a councilor for health and care in the municipality of Tromsø. She says they take the situation seriously.
– Now we have received a very serious warning that things are not good enough at the Health Center.
Johansen says staffing needs to be increased.
– I see we have to do something about the staff situation, especially at night, he says.
He also believes that the recruitment of nurses should be intensified.
– The signals that politicians have received are that there is a lot of labor pressure. We must do something about it immediately, says Johansen.
