Snow may create problems in southern and eastern Norway this week. In the north it will be cold and strong winds.
The weather in eastern Norway in recent days may have led one to believe that spring is here, but it is still not safe to completely unpack winter clothes. During the week, we can expect a change in the weather in both the north and the south, says on-duty meteorologist Per Egil Haga.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued two yellow snow hazard warnings. One for Agder and one for Oslo, Akershus, Buskerud, Vestfold and Telemark. This can lead to longer travel time and difficult driving conditions in the affected areas, according to the warnings.
With the exception of some rainfall from Sunnmøre and north to Troms, the week starts off calm in terms of weather, but Wednesday is heading south as well as north, Haga says.
– There is a fairly strong low pressure from the west to the south of the country. It gives increasing and good wind with rainfall both on Wednesday and Thursday.
In the hazard forecast for both Agder and eastern Norway, a lot of snow is expected in the inland and higher areas from Wednesday afternoon and evening. 15 to 30 cm of snow in the south and 10 to 25 cm of snow in the east.
– So there may be so much snow that we think it can create some challenges. That’s why we’ve issued a separate warning, Haga says.
In Agder, the precipitation will change from snow to sleet and rain in the lower areas over time. On Thursday morning a snow line of 500 to 700 meters is expected. The snow line is the zone between the snow and the rain, Haga explains. In eastern Norway, precipitation will quickly turn to rain and sleet, and on Thursday morning the snow line will be 300 to 500 meters.
– In the center of Oslo, I think it starts out as snow or sleet, but turns into rain. In the field it can accumulate a little more snow, but beyond Thursday the snow line rises and there may be rain in the field on Thursday, says Haga.
Strong north wind
Western Norway also doesn’t completely escape precipitation during the week, but it shouldn’t create any problems, according to the meteorologist.
North of Dovre it will be cold and windy.
– Starting on Wednesday, there will be a strong east wind to the north of the country from Trøndelag north to Troms and perhaps to Finnmark. That wind from the east can be very strong, especially in Trøndelag and Nordland. It’s also very cold, Haga says.
The northern parts of the country will escape the rainfall, but it will be cold. Low pressure will continue to affect the south of the country on Friday, but rainfall activity will slow.
