Now comes the ski slope

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute offers good news to oriental ski lovers. Already on Friday, there are opportunities to get to the mountain and take the first ski trip of this year.

Snow and sleet over parts of eastern and southern Norway started Thursday night.

– Off the coast there is sleet, more than approx. At an altitude of 100 meters, there will be snow until Friday. There won’t be large quantities, says state meteorologist Jan-Erik Brandt at the Dagbladet Meteorological Institute at 5.30pm Thursday.

In much of southern Norway, there was ice in the cloud cover beyond Thursday, especially south of Lillehammer. Conditions in the air are so difficult that a Sea King rescue helicopter with divers has had trouble reaching Oslo at Lake Røgden via Kongsvinger, where a car has cut through the ice.

Ski in cabin areas

– It will surely be possible to try skiing in many places in the valley and mountains of southern Norway, but it will be gray and cloudy, on-duty meteorologist Martin Granerød tells Dagbladet.

There is no reason to wait to turn your nose towards the cabin, if you are going on a ski trip.

– Those who go up to their cabins this weekend, can ski on Thursday or Friday, says Granerød.

But it will be softer over the weekend, so the snow may disappear again.

Gray

Despite the good news for cross-country skiers, you have a caveat.

– The sun will be found elsewhere, says the meteorologist.

Most places in the country leave behind another week of gray weather.

– The gray climate continues in southern and eastern Norway, and is relatively mild, so what comes from precipitation will come as rain in the areas near the coast and along the Oslo Fjord, and as snow in the heights, says Granerød.

In other words, it will be more degrees in the lowlands and less degrees in the mountains.

A heavy snow warning has been issued in several places in southern Norway.

Soft

Up to 15 cm of snow has been forecast in Buskerud and Akershus, and further south in Agder and Telemark it has been announced that there may be up to 40 cm of snow, but it will be higher, at an altitude of between 500 and 600 meters, says Granerød.

– There will be periods of light snow, but also longer periods of stay, he says.

Both the Meteorological Institute and the Norwegian Public Highway Administration write a more or less identical sentence on Twitter:

“Sudden” Snow Hazard Warning

– Drive carefully and make sure you are prepared for the conditions!

Less rain to the west and north

Western Norway and the north will have a week with less rainfall, says the meteorologist.

– It appears to be a week with little or no precipitation, and it is also the west and north that seem to have sunshine, says Granerød.

-That is, where it is not yet dark time, then, he adds.

November was an extremely humid month in southern Norway. Rogaland, Vestland and the North Inland both received three times more rainfall than normal during November.

The 11th month of this year was the ninth wettest November since 1900, according to the Meteorological Institute.
