A city of extreme trams
Next year, the new trams will be tested on the tracks in Oslo.
– Thorough preparations have been made. Oslo is a relatively extreme tram city. There are very few Central European cities that have such ascents as we do, for example from Ekebergskrenten from the old town or from Grünerløkka to Kjelsås, says press contact Jan Rustad in Sporveien to Aftenposten.
Total replacement of trams by 2024
In 2018, Sporveien signed a contract with the Spanish supplier CAF for the delivery of 87 new trams to the capital.
At that time, the need to modernize the tram park had been urgent for many years. In the late 1990s, Oslo bought the so-called trams from Italy. It didn’t work out so well. The trams were more in the workshop than in traffic, and the politicians decided to eliminate them.
The new trams are part of the large investment of the municipality of Oslo in the offer of trams in the city. At the same time, the tram infrastructure, city streets and tram bases will also be improved.
By 2024, new trams will have replaced today’s old trams, according to Cato Hellesjø, director of the Oslo tram program and CEO of Sporveien.
