When Fulham announced its 25-man squad in the Premier League on Tuesday night, Norway’s national team captain Stefan Johansen was not among the names.
This means that Johansen will not be allowed to play club soccer until at the earliest when the transfer window opens in January.
Stefan Johansen has a contract with Fulham until the summer of 2022. According to The Athletic, Fulham were keen to release the Norwegian this summer, but the 29-year-old was still a Fulham player when the transfer window closed.
Johansen has played two games for Fulham in the League Cup this season, but in the fourth round the London club lost to city rivals Brentford.
Fulham have also left Josh Onomah and Jean Michaël Seri out of the squad.
Last season, he played 36 games in all tournaments, but struggled with playing time at the start after the crown break. He was not involved in the playoffs that ended with Fulham advancing.
Johansen struggled with playing time in the Premier League even the last time Fulham was up. He was then loaned to West Bromwich in the Championship mid-season.
Fulham are last in the Premier League with one point after five games.
Johansen started for Norway in a 1-2 loss to Serbia in the European Championship playoffs earlier this month. In hindsight, he had to endure criticism for a weak party. He did not get playing time in the following games against Romania and Northern Ireland.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has also excluded Sergio Romero and Phil Jones from the team’s Premier League squad.
