Norwegians in a new survey: we drink less alcohol than before

– Alcohol consumption is now at a record low so far in the pandemic. Limited alcohol consumption in nightlife and the absence of holidays and Christmas parties is another important reason, says senior advisor Nora Clausen in Opinion.

In the Norwegian Corona Monitor survey, Opinion has asked Norwegians during the pandemic how their alcohol consumption has been in the last week, compared to a normal week before the corona outbreak.

In December, only 8 percent said they had a higher alcohol consumption, while 29 percent had a lower consumption. 63 percent say consumption has not changed.

Many have lower consumption

The proportion reporting lower consumption in December is 10 percentage points higher than the pandemic average. The share with lower consumption is also 5 percentage points higher than in November, which until now was a record month of lower consumption.

In total for the entire pandemic, 9 percent say they have had a higher than normal consumption of alcohol after the corona outbreak, while 19 percent have had a lower consumption. The rest declare that consumption has not changed.

Pour stop and sales growth

Starting on November 7, the government introduced a national bar stop at midnight. In Oslo, a total ban on alcoholic beverages has been introduced, and in several other municipalities there are also stricter rules on alcoholic beverages than those that the government has introduced at the national level.

During the corona pandemic, alcohol sales in Norway increased sharply. According to Statistics Norway, 29.3% more pure alcohol was sold in Norway in the third quarter of this year than in the same quarter last year. Vinmonopolet has also reported strong sales growth. In November, sales were up 43 percent compared to last year. The fact that there is now an almost complete disruption of cross-border trade is probably part of the reason.
