Marie Fangel (80), a former Liberal Party municipal politician in Tromsø, passed away yesterday on New Year’s Eve.

The family says she was surrounded by loved ones when she fell asleep.

– She died at home where she was surrounded by relatives. It was a peaceful death and I dare say a beautiful death, says her husband Eigil Thorsen.

It says that Marie Fangel, at her own request, came home from the hospital on Christmas Eve.

– It was his inner desire, and we had a good few days together.

Markant politician

Tromsø has lost a strong political voice with the passing of Marie Fangel on New Year’s Eve. Fangel had a strong local political commitment and was first elected to the municipal council as a permanent representative of the Liberal Party in 1991.

In total, he was a member of the municipal council for 24 years. She was particularly interested in urban development and architecture, and was intensely and personally involved in a number of development issues in Tromsø.

She is perhaps best remembered for her participation in the debate surrounding the development of Prostneset. First, he led the discussion on high-rise buildings in the years before Edge was given the go-ahead, then he was central to the debate on how the Port Terminal should be developed.

Nestor

Marie Fangel’s party friends in the Liberal Party mourn her passing.

With sadness we have received the message that Marie Fangel has passed away. Thoughts go to his family and week at least to his Eigil. Marie Fangel was a prominent local Liberal Party politician in Tromsø, an important figure in the party. He left his mark on politics throughout six periods of municipal government, with commitment and rigor. She was an immigrant like so many others, but a Tromsø resident like some, she was passionate about the urban environment, urban development and historical traces, especially the wooden city. Many houses are probably due to his efforts, says Tromsø Venstre leader Håvard Pedersen and the party’s group leader in the municipal council, Morten Skandfer, in a press release.

Other aspects of Marie Fangel’s commitment stand out.

– She was also very interested in the role of voluntary organizations in society, she was, among other things, a reader friend. Gradually, she devoted more and more energy to the issue of high office and was the obvious Liberal Party candidate for the high-level council. For members of the Liberal Party, it was a source of inputted policy development until recently. Her experience as an elected representative for several years was an inspiration and an impressive contribution to local democracy. It is this legacy and memories that we carry with us further in gratitude for the human being and citizen Marie Fangel.
