NorgesGruppen, Grocery | Now Norgesgruppen is making changes: it will clarify where the meat comes from

The way Norgesgruppen branded the meat’s country of origin generated anger earlier this summer, now the company is making changes.

Recently, Nettavisen has written about Norwegian and foreign meat, and how the labeling of the latter has set minds on fire.

It started with Anders Nordstad, a regular Nettavisen blogger, enraged at not finding enough Norwegian meat in Norwegian grocery stores, and thinking that imported meat is labeled very bad.

Bård Gultvedt, director of trade policy and government contact at Norgesgruppen, informed Nettavisen that they were considering whether they could mark countries of origin more clearly.

Now Norgesgruppen is making changes. Even before the crown crisis, the company must have been working on plans to mark even more clearly the country of origin, they themselves report to the Nation.

Starting Tuesday, one of the two changes will take effect. Then fresh meat will have a clearer label than it is today. In a few months the second change will take effect and then the whole package will focus on the country of origin.

– We recognize that the labeling that is today may be clearer than what the regulations require. We don’t want customers to feel unsafe in the country of origin and will increase the visibility of the label in the short term, says Vidar Olsen, category manager for fresh produce at Norgesgruppen to Nationen.
