Nordland Warns: Penalty for Mobile Phone Use in Cars Increases

The government announced in a press release on Friday.

– It is dangerous to use the mobile phone when driving a car. It has been banned since 2000. However, we see that many are unable to put their mobile phones away while driving. Therefore, we are now increasing the fines to 5,000 crowns and the points from two to three if taken with the car, says Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide in the press release.

A triple

The changes were decided by the Minister on Friday and will take effect at the end of the year. Today, the fine is 1700 crowns, which represents an increase of almost three times. Point charging was introduced in 2019.

– It has not had the expected effect. Therefore, we must resort to stronger means. With higher fines and another point, I hope drivers see the seriousness of this. It should be as safe as possible to be in traffic. So all focus should be on what happens when you drive, says Hareide.

– Unacceptable

– It is important that the police have sanctioning measures that have both preventive effect and consequences for those who break the law. This is a sharp increase that I hope people will think about. It is not acceptable to use a mobile phone when driving a car and therefore you now get a sting if you do so, says Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Monica Mæland.

In addition to the sharp increase in fines for the use of mobile phones in cars, the rates of all simplified fines are increased. This is in accordance with the adjustment of the consumer price index from 2018 to 2020.

Fines must be an impediment. So we must ensure that they maintain a level that is in line with price developments, says the Minister of Transport.
