Nordland warns: many are worried, but hardly anyone practices

Fire tops the list of accidents that we fear will affect our homes. Shows a new survey conducted in relation to Brannvernuka 2020.

Prepare more

Six out of ten say they are concerned about a home fire, well above fear of water or sewer leaks (22%), theft (20%), pests or fungi (16%), and other incidents.

– A fire can be deadly, very destructive and traumatic, it is not surprising that we are afraid of it, says Elisabeth Aarsæther, Director of DSB and continues:

– Fortunately, there are several things you can do to be better prepared. Check that smoke alarms and firefighting equipment are working, test escape routes, set up an outdoor gathering place, and talk together about what you do if the alarm goes off.

Hardly anyone practices

Although fire is one of our biggest home concerns, only 1 in 10 has completed a home fire drill in the last year.

– As an adult, you may think that you want to act rationally when the fire alarm goes off. However, it is not so easy to keep a cool head when the house is full of smoke and the body is full of adrenaline. You may only have a few minutes to get the whole family to safety. Practice evacuation at home, create safety for children and adults, says Rolf Søtorp, executive director of the Norwegian Association for Fire Protection.

About the survey

The figures appear in a recent population survey conducted by Kantar in the period 28.8.-7.9.2020, on behalf of the Norwegian Fire Protection Association and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB).
