Noah Jean Holm on the emergency national team, the rival arrangement against Braga and life as a teammate with superstar Ricardo Quaresma (37).

The 19-year-old left Norway and Strømsgodset when he was 15 in favor of Leipzig, before leaving for Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães this summer.

There have already been five innings for the Norwegian Under-21 forward.

– This is the first time I am part of a real A-team. I trained a lot with the A-team in Leipzig, but I have not felt in everyday life like an A-team, and to be a regular part of it. It is fairly new to me, but it has been well received. The boys speak English quite well, and we have many foreigners who are in the same situation, Holm tells Nettavisen over the phone from his apartment in Portugal.

He lives there with his best friend from Denmark, who according to Holm currently works as a “personal chef”.

The top Norwegian talent left Norwegian football four years ago and has attended much of his school abroad. He notices a big difference in the soccer of Germany versus Portugal.

– The handling of the ball is very different from that of Germany. In Germany you advance head-on early and there is a lot of ping pong, but here is a better time to throw the ball and pass the time, but at the same time attack when you go fast.

It suits Holm, who has two goals in three games for the U21 team.

– I am a forward who is good at holding the ball and waiting for my teammates to arrive or to appear themselves.

Get into the scorching heat of the moment

Despite the 19-year-old joining the club in July, he trains regularly with team A, which is eighth in the Portuguese top league.

One of the young man’s entries occurred on October 25, when Vitória Guimarães met with Braga over a hate agreement.

Holm was ready on the sidelines when a massive fight nearly broke out after one inning, resulting in a total of three red cards just before the end.

Then Holm was thrown straight to the wolves in a match that noticed early on how much he meant to fans.

– There were fans with lights around the bus all that week, he says and points out that the derby is slightly lost when the games are played in empty stands.

The prelude to the match, however, attested to how much the deal means to the club’s supporters.

– All week there were messages on the phone that “you are going to fuck me to sharpen yourself that week.” The fans wrote many messages and announced that the match is the most important of the season. When we were at the hotel the night before, there were maybe 100 fans with spotlights and all, he says.

He had to cancel the national emergency team

Holm has done well on age-specific national teams, but he has only three matches at the second highest level of the national team pyramid.

However, he reveals that he received a phone call when the Norwegian Football Association (NFF) called several foreign profiles to put together a team for the Nations League match against Austria on Wednesday.

– I do not want to go so deep in that, but they only asked me if I had the opportunity to know if something happened, he reveals.

It would probably have been a good opportunity to play in the 1-1 match, as Leif Gunnar Smerud only had two clean forwards in Veton Berisha and Jørgen Strand Larsen with him in Austria.

However, a minor blow to the ankle prevented Holm from jumping into the plane from Portugal.

– Of course, it was great (to be asked), but it was a bit strange that I was not 100 percent “fit”. Playing for the A team is always something you dream of, but I’m very happy that they at least saw my way, he says.

Will continue to reject Denmark

The former Strømsgodset forward is the son of former Elite Series profile David Nielsen, who played at both Start, Strømsgodset and Brann.

Both Nielsen and Holm’s mother are Danish, but the young man lived in Norway since the age of seven, has Norwegian citizenship and has played for the Norwegian sub-national team from the U15 level.

The online newspaper wrote in 2018 that the Danish Football Association has worked to persuade Holm to play for them, but the main character himself assures that Norway is very likely to benefit from his services in the future as well.

Do you have this with you? – Dad was a “go-to-hoc”, I can too

If you get an A international match for one of the countries, you are basically blocked.

– Right now I don’t have any dialogue with them, and I don’t intend to start any dialogue either. Right now I am part of the U21 team. That’s where all my focus is, and I look forward to playing for the A national team.

– So if you weren’t injury free when the NFF phone call came this weekend, you wouldn’t have been on the think tank?

– No. Then I would have packed my bags right away and ran to the airport, he laughs.

The forward also does not regret leaving Norway early and leaving Drammen and Strømsgodset in favor of Leipzig in 2017.

– It’s a great question every time you get those offers. Of course there are many who influence it, but I think it’s about what you think. The education you get abroad is “second to none” and gives you that little bit more, he says and continues.

– When you are at home in Norway, everything is so nice, and you have mom’s food and so on. You get a little bit more tough and grow overseas early.

Team up with Quaresma

Hans Vitória Guimarães occupies eighth place with 10 points after seven league games. Holm’s crew has not only strengthened with the Norwegian this year, because a transfer in September attracted a lot of attention.

Then the Portuguese superstar Ricardo Quaresma was ready for the club, but it was not the signing of the 37-year-old with a past in both Barcelona, Inter and Chelsea that drew attention, but rather the introduction of him.

Vitória really hit the big drum and released a more than one minute intro video, culminating with Quaresma coming out on a white horse in club outfit.

The video immediately became a topic of conversation between Holm and her teammates.

– We had been training that day. There had been some rumors that he might come here, but none of us had taken it seriously. Then everyone came in and then we heard talking in the locker room and they told us to go on Instagram and see it. Then we saw Quaresma come in on horseback and wearing a crown, so he was completely ill. When you pick such a player, it should be a bit more, he laughs.

However, the star of the national team with more than 80 appearances for Portugal has surprised the young Norwegian.

– I try to learn as much as possible. He is very good at giving advice and we often talk together. He likes to post a lot of posts, and he’s very good at giving feedback on where he wants him to be, Holm says and continues.

– There are several of us who think that he is 37 years old and comes here and is going to earn his last money before retiring, but that is the furthest from the truth. He is the one who cares the most about the good training. Scream and shout in the locker room if there’s something you’re unhappy with and lift the rest of us up. A very, very fresh breath in the closet, he concludes.
