In her opening remarks, committee chair Lindsey Graham described Judge Amy Coney Barrett as “a brilliant woman the country should be proud of,” but predicted it would be a long and controversial week of hearings.
Top Democratic Leader Dianne Feinstein began her speech by defending health care reforms passed under President Barack Obama and said Barret’s appointment could threaten the health care of millions of Americans.
“Simply put, I think we shouldn’t proceed with this nomination,” Feinstein said, requesting that the hearing be postponed until after the election.
Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy noted that Republicans announced the plan to fill the seat of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg just an hour after the announcement of her death.
