The business community has been hard hit by the corona pandemic. At the same time, many of us have seen our daily lives disrupted by social closure and the advice to gather as few as possible and stay home as much as possible.

But even though the crown pandemic is hitting us hard, there is broad support among Norwegians for the government’s crown measures.

Shows a survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Dagbladet.

87 percent support

The question posed to the 942 participants is whether to support the measures that have been implemented to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, even if they harm the economy.

The question is subject to the condition that the crown’s situation is the same as when the survey was conducted on December 14-16.

Up to 87 percent believe that “we must do what is necessary to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, even if the measures hurt the economy.”

However, nine percent believe that “society must be reopened to rebuild the economy, even if the spread of the coronavirus may increase,” while three percent have answered “I don’t know.”

In the analysis of the result, Ipsos states that there are only small differences between subgroups. People aged 25 to 39 agree somewhat more with the last statement, that is, that society should reopen, with 14 percent, significantly above the average.

The oldest age group, 60 and over, meanwhile, agree significantly more with the statement that we should do everything possible to prevent the spread, with 93%.

– Demanding winter ahead of us

Deputy Health Director Espen Rostrup Nakstad tells Dagbladet that the results are a good starting point for the next few months.

– It is a very good starting point as we enter a winter in which we know it will be demanding to maintain control over the spread of infection in Norway, says Nakstad.

He says the Ipsos survey figures match well with his own surveys conducted by the Norwegian Health Directorate.

– The high support is probably due in large part to people seeing what is happening in the rest of Europe. Keeping control of the spread of the infection in Norway is demanding, but also crucial so that we can live as normally as possible in the coming months, although we are all obviously very tired of the whole pandemic.

I’m happy for the support

Trade and Industry Minister Iselin Nybø tells Dagbladet that the government adapts measures as necessary.

– Of course I am happy that so many show understanding for the measures we have introduced, he says.

– The government puts life and health first, and develops and adapts measures so as not to inflict greater disadvantage on society than necessary. We have put crisis packages in the hundreds of billions on the table to help the business community and workers overcome the corona pandemic. Our goal is for as many people as possible to recover from the crisis, he continues.

However, both the opposition and a number of industries have called for more financial aid from the government for those most affected by the crown’s measures this fall.

This is especially true for the restaurant and catering industry.
