New measures: – – Nothing is excluded

On Thursday, 189 new cases of infection were registered in Oslo in one day, and in the last 14 days, 2,301 people tested positive for covid-19 in the capital.

To TV2, Health Minister Bent Høie (H) said on Wednesday that it is “urgent to reverse development in Oslo in view of the situation in hospitals in eastern Norway (…)”. Health Councilor Robert Steen (Labor Party) shares the concern and cannot rule out that further action will be necessary if the rise in infection continues.

– As the Minister of Health has also said before: Nothing is out of the question. We do our best to avoid it, and fortunately we see that now people are staying much more at home. We must continue with that, Steen writes in an email to Dagbladet.

– It is not now that we will find gaps in the regulations and we will hold social gatherings, he continues.

Will avoid curfew

On Tuesday, the Oslo City Council introduced a series of measures aimed at young people, including the red level in upper secondary schools and a ban on indoor leisure activities and sports in general for young people aged 13-19.

The City Council now hopes that stricter measures for young people can prevent a total closure in Oslo. When asked if a curfew may be relevant if the number of infections continues to rise, Steen answers the following:

– We hope for a long time to avoid this, but the toolbox we have available before the full shutdown begins to run out. Fortunately, we see that people are staying much more at home now.

– I have no choice

The number of infection cases is constantly increasing in Europe, and several countries have recently had to reintroduce highly intrusive infection control measures in an attempt to overcome the second wave of the virus.

High infection rates in Europe will likely affect the infection situation in Norway, Steen believes.

– In addition, autumn brings with it an increased risk of respiratory infections that will challenge the health service and the municipality with tests, infection detection and quarantine. We have no choice, we must stop the infection while we can, so we have devised powerful measures and we cannot rule out that more will come, he says.

It warns that hospitals do not have enough intensive care units or employees with the right skills to accommodate a large increase in infections.

– If the infection does not subside, we run the risk that everyone who becomes ill will not receive the treatment they need, says Steen.
