The Norwegian Football Association reports on the new corona cases in a press release on Friday morning.
Henriksen, Berg and Lode tested positive in Oslo yesterday. Vice Captain Omar Elabdellaoui has previously passed a positive test. This led to the national team’s match against Romania being canceled on Sunday, and Norway had to send a reserve national team to Austria.
– Players who tested positive have been in quarantine at the player’s hotel since the meeting of the national team ended on Saturday, says the team doctor, Ola Sand.
– They would not risk the spread of infection by going home, and have followed infection control rules with the use of face masks and practiced social distancing. The players have not had contact with other people.
The players’ clubs have been notified and the players now remain isolated.
All clubs of national team players abroad are informed about the infection that arose at the national team meeting in Oslo and the quarantine regulations. Players are evaluated and closely followed at their clubs before they are eligible for training and games.
– It’s a shame for Markus. The only thing that matters now is that he does not get seriously ill and that everything goes well, says Rosenborg coach Åge Hareide.
– UEFA’s protocol takes into account the risk of infection, but the goal is to eliminate more infections internally and prevent infection in society at large, says national team doctor Ola Sand.
He continues:
– In our case, the total isolation of the infected player was the first step. This was probably contagious the same day the positive test was taken (Thursday 11/12). The rules for infection control have been followed, but it is most likely that one or more players have had enough contact with the player in question to become infected. All three players are virtually symptom free overnight through Friday.
Jesper Mathisen, soccer expert from TV 2, is not surprised that several national team players are now infected. To Dagbladet he says:
– This is just proof of how bad it was about to get and how bad it really has become. NFF was determined to fly out of the country with several infected players and was concerned about such good protocols and that there is distance. It almost sounded like soccer players couldn’t get infected. We just have to praise Bent Høie and company. for the decision they made when the national team was in Gardermoen ready to travel.
Berg, Lode and Henriksen’s new cases of infection occurred while the three were in isolation in a hotel in Oslo. Mathisen believes that they have been so careful that they deserve praise, unlike the players who went to their respective clubs abroad.
– I must give full credit to these guys who have taken responsibility and stayed in Oslo and did not catch any infection. But there are x number of players who have traveled and it is anything but good if they bring infection and spread more, says the soccer expert.
The new infection cases mean Bodø / Glimt will likely have to celebrate league gold without two of their biggest players this season. Mathisen thinks this is sad, but also points out that this could lead to this year’s elite series season continuing through 2021.
– I think they will play games in January to end this here. I think the Eliteserien and the Obos league have been very good as they have had so many games with no further infection, so we can hope it continues, says Mathisen.
Chaos: warn
Bodø / Glimt General Manager Frode Thomassen informs Dagbladet that Sunday’s match against Strømsgodset will go as planned, despite two key players not being able to participate.
– It’s a boring situation in which we have ended. It’s a special situation, but we have to handle it as it is, Thomassen tells Dagbladet.
In the morning, the club has been in contact with both Berg and Lode, who assure that their form is good. Now they have to watch their companions’ gold celebration from the hotel room.
– Our guys have been quarantined in Oslo, so we have managed to keep the infection out of the squad and we have good players who can come in. But it is clear that for them it is boring, says the CEO.
Patrick Berg did not respond to Dagbladet’s questions on Friday.
