National Team, Soccer | Haaland and Ødegaard stole the headlines, but the expert points to a completely different player

Lars Lagerbäck took action after the recession against Serbia. Now one of the players who had the opportunity feels especially honored.

NORWAY – ROMANIA 4-0

STADION ULLEVAAL (Nettavisen): Lagerbäck opted to make several changes to the starting lineup against Romania after the swoon against Serbia.

Tore Reginiussen, Stefan Johansen, Markus Henriksen and Haitam Aleesami all disappeared from the squad, after the latter three in particular received much criticism for Thursday’s performance.

The Swedish national team coach told the press conference that Reginiussen, Johansen and Aleesami were unable to play on Sunday due to injuries.

In any case, he was able to see Birger Meling, who replaced Aleesami on the left back, sometimes play big in Ullevaal.

Get compliments from the boss

The new Nîmes player ran up and down the Norwegian left wing and capped off a very good game with a beautiful goal pass to Alexander Sørloth before the break.

After the agreement, the boss praised the 25-year-old.

– Birger played a very good match, says Lagerbäck to Nettavisen and says Aleesami without club was completely finished after more than 100 minutes against Serbia.

However, Meling’s performance makes it truly a battle for a place on Norway’s left back.

– It can be said that Birger definitely did not reduce his chances of a place in the starting lineup based on his performance.

Bratseth impressed

Another who was impressed by Meling is former national team stopper Rune Bratseth.

While both Martin Ødegaard and Erling Braut Haaland are praised for their achievements, Bratseth also highlights Meling as one of the players who impressed him.

Bratseth is pleased that the Norwegian left performed much better against Romania compared to the match against Serbia.

– The left was excellent, perhaps especially Meling, says Bratseth to Nettavisen.

As a Rosenborg player, Bratseth has known Meling well before, after the left-back spent several seasons in Lerkendal.

– We know everything about him in Trøndelag. He is a wise player with a fierce engine. He also has a good eye for the game. He is a class player and plays soccer. It’s also an important point, says Bratseth, referring to Aleesami, who has been without clubs for a long time.

However, the former national team hero will not insist that Meling and Mohamed Elyounoussi start the next game against Northern Ireland on Norway’s left side, although he will not be surprised if they do.

– Taking the team out is terribly difficult when looking at things from a distance, but they put in a good effort and were significantly better than the previous case, says Bratseth.

Rekdal: – Logical

Former national team player Kjetil Rekdal won’t want to get too involved in any team selection either, but he thinks it makes sense for Lagerbäck to take action on the deal against Romania.

He is pleased that Norway is succeeding.

– That there was another team selection against Romania was actually logical as the whole team underperformed against Serbia. So you change someone anyway to try to get some new energy on the team. If we had beaten Serbia, we would not have had that discussion at all, Rekdal tells Nettavisen.

The former national team hero was only able to watch the second round of the national match as he himself was busy leading HamKam to victory against Sandnes Ulf on Sunday night, but was impressed by what he saw of the aforementioned Meling.

– What I saw was good. That doesn’t surprise me either. Play in France in a tough league. Everyone knows that Meling is a good player, says Rekdal

Like Bratseth, he doesn’t want to worry too much about whether Meling will start the next match or not.

– Time will tell, but it’s fun that more people sign up. We need a strong team with great competition that drives performance up and forward. Then we have to push each other, says Rekdal, who saw a Norwegian team rise sharply after the loss against Serbia.

– I am very impressed that Norway win 4-0, says Rekdal.

Now Northern Ireland awaits the Ullevaal Stadium in the next Nations League game next Wednesday for Lagerbäck and his players. With Sunday’s win against Romania, Norway is seriously involved in the battle for victory in the Nations League group.
