On Tuesday night, the US State Department said the FBI is investigating mysterious, automated calls that encourage people to stay home on Election Day, according to the Reuters news agency.
An estimated 10 million such calls have been made in recent days, the Washington Post reports.
Confusion
The deputy director of the RoboKiller company, Giulia Porter, informs Reuters that there is confusion about what is said in the mysterious calls.
Michigan State Attorney Dana Nessel warned Tuesday afternoon that people were urged to wait until Wednesday to cast their votes, while Porter had access to a garbage call that did not mention the election.
Garbage call
“Hello. This is just a test call. Now is the time to stay home. Stay safe and stay home,” says a female voice in the call revealed by RoboKiller. The current trash call has been played by millions of times over the past eleven months, and on Tuesday it climbed to be in the top five most played junk calls in America.
“This garbage call is spreading to a great extent,” Porter told Reuters.
The RoboKiller company works with telemarketers and junk calls, and has helped monitor activity during the presidential elections.
The alarm sounds
On Tuesday afternoon, Prosecutor Nessel noted that she had been informed that several Flint neighbors had received automated calls with false messages.
According to Nessel, residents of Flint, a Michigan city of more than 100,000 residents, have been told they should vote Wednesday because of long lines.
– This is obviously incorrect and is an attempt to stop the voices. These are not long lines and today is the last day you can vote. Don’t believe the lies! Make sure you are heard!
These types of calls have also been reported to have been made in the states of Florida, Iowa and Kansas.
