In her New Years address, Prime Minister Erna Solberg described 2020 as a bad year. It started off optimistically, then came the corona virus, and the year ended with the tragic catastrophe at Romerike.
For TV 2, Solberg admits that this has been her most difficult year as prime minister.
– Yes, it was. This is a special kind of crisis that lasts for a long time and affects the whole of society. The drop in oil prices and the refugee crisis were also demanding, but this has been going on for ten months, says Solberg.
Like King Harald on New Year’s Eve, the prime minister began by praising the rescue work and showing compassion for those affected in Gjerdrum.
– 2020: A really bad year!
– 2020 turned out to be a really bad year. At the beginning of the year the corona virus appeared. At the end of the year, we witnessed the destruction that the forces of nature can do. Then Gjerdrum at Romerike was hit by one of the worst clay fast landslides in recent memory. Many people are affected. Many have lost their homes. Many are still evacuated and many live in uncertainty. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this disaster and our thanks to the rescue teams who have done a formidable job, the Prime Minister said in the New Year’s address.
But even though 2020 was a bad year, the Prime Minister believes that 2020 also showed what Norwegians are capable of.
“The efforts of the people will forever be something we can remember with pride,” said the Prime Minister.
Online challenges
2021 is also guaranteed to be a challenging year for the Prime Minister. Norway will occupy a permanent seat on the UN Security Council starting in the New Year. In autumn, there will be parliamentary elections where polls so far indicate a change of government. Nor can the Prime Minister promise immediate relief in people’s daily lives. Even though the vaccine is on the way, we will have to live with strict restrictions for a while longer.
– It’s not funny. I know, said Erna Solberg, but she endorsed the words of the resistance hero Tore Gjelsvik, with the title of her book “Our day is coming soon.
– Soon the day will come when we can give each other good hugs. Stand together at a concert and sing your heart out and let tourists enjoy the best that Norway has to offer. I hope so, said the Prime Minister.
