– He’s fine. Both the doctors and my father are happy, and he seems to be recovering well, says Crown Prince Haakon.

On Thursday it was announced that the king would undergo heart surgery. The operation was successful and the royal family is relieved.

– I would like to thank the whole hospital team with Bjørn Bendz at the helm, who have done an incredibly good job. It is very impressive what they achieve. It went very well, we knew they were very good, but it was still very good to know that everything went well, says the Crown Prince.

– Has your breathing improved after the operation?

– You probably haven’t been able to test it properly yet, but it will probably come in the next few days when you start to get a little more active, says the Crown Prince.

– Assume the functions

The Crown Prince explains that it was not a very big risk, but that the royal family followed it with enthusiasm.

– I admit it was a relief to know it went well. One gets a little uneasy, says the crown prince.

– It’s in the constitution when the king is on sick leave, I take over. “I’ve been involved with this before and it’s relatively clear,” says the Crown Prince.

On Thursday, His Majesty the King entered Rikshospitalet to undergo heart surgery. The royal family visited him in hospital on Friday after undergoing successful heart surgery.

Fifteen years ago, the king replaced the heart valve with an artificial one. It is this that has now reached the end of its useful life and therefore had to be replaced with a new one.

New method

The method used during the 83-year-old man’s operation this time is relatively new. The patient is awake during the operation and only locally anesthetized.

– The operation was performed in a hybrid room, that is, a mix of X-ray laboratory and operating room. A temporary pacemaker was installed first. The procedure itself was then performed through a carotid artery in the groin. A new biological heart valve was inserted through the access in the inguinal artery and placed within the anterior valve. In this way, the old flap was pushed to the side of the new flap that worked well. After the operation, His Majesty the King was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further observation, says doctor Bjørn Bendz.

The last time the king received a new heart valve, in 2005, patients underwent anesthesia to open up the area around the heart. Now the new valve was attached to a catheter and inserted through the main artery to the groin.
