murder: – One question becomes crucial

When Makaveli Lindén (22) enters room 207 on Monday morning, it is the beginning of the end of a two-year murder case. On the morning of October 15, 2018, he entered a bus at Majorstua in Oslo, in search of valuables.

Of the four who lived in the collective at Arbos Gate, only Heikki Bjørklund Paltto was at home. Before long, the 24-year-old was stabbed 45 times and killed.

One issue in particular will be central during the five-day trial: Swedish Lindén’s state of mind when the murder took place.

Check out the Dagbladet Right on podcast about the Majorstua murder below.

Psychotic state

– It appears from the accusation that the prosecution believes that he has acted in a psychotic state and, therefore, has requested transfer to compulsory mental health care. This means that, based on the overall picture of the evidence, we believe that it cannot be sufficiently proven that he was sane when he committed the criminal acts, says prosecutor Trude Antonsen.

It confirms that experts have been appointed who will shed light on Lindén’s psyche. In addition to the 22-year-old’s explanation, there will also be eyewitness explanations about the discovery at the scene and what happened in the minutes leading up to Heikki Bjørklund Paltto’s death.

– This, among other things, will be clarified by investigators, forensic technicians and the doctor who performed the autopsy, says Antonsen.

Past theft becomes a topic

In 2017, the year before the murder in the Majorstua collective, Lindén was convicted of robbing several other people in a collective in his hometown of Uppsala. As in Norway, a knife was also used here. However, no one was injured.

– How long will the defendant’s past be, his life in Sweden and his criminal record?

– The criminal record will be documented in the usual way. It’s particularly important in relation to the reaction question, Antonsen tells Dagbladet.

Five days have been reserved for the trial in the Oslo District Court. The prosecutor says that Lindén’s confession to having committed the murder means that a relatively short time is reserved for the trial.

– Even if it is a murder case, there is no reason to take the presentation of evidence beyond what is considered necessary to shed light on the fact and the question of the reaction. The confession of the accused and the explanation to the police has been important in order to limit the testimony, he says.

- My son has been murdered and I will never get him back.

The defender agrees

Lindén’s defender, lawyer Øystein Storrvik, tells Dagbladet that his client’s mental health will be very important when the trial begins on Monday.

– We related to the forensic psychiatric report, and we think it must be considered that he was insane at the time of the crime, Storrvik tells Dagbladet.
