Makaveli Lindén (22) has been sentenced to be transferred to compulsory mental health care. It arises from a recent decision by the Oslo District Court, reports TV 2.

The Swede appeared in mid-October in room 207, accused of having killed Heikki Bjørklund Paltto, 24, on October 15, 2018.

Paltto lived in a collective in Majorstua and the murder triggered a major police manhunt in Europe. Lindén was finally arrested in Dijon, France, eight days after the murder in Oslo.

– This is in accordance with what we asked, and it is not a big surprise, Lindén’s defender, lawyer Øystein Storrvik, tells Dagbladet.

In addition to the transfer to treatment, he must pay 40,000 in restitution to each of Paltto’s parents.

– There is no unexpected result, considering what the experts concluded. The claim for compensation has been relaxed due to the illness but was not reduced to zero, says development assistance attorney Gunhild Lærum, who originally asked for NOK 300,000 in restitution for the deceased’s mother.

According to the procedures

Both prosecutor Trude Antonsen and Lindén’s defense attorney, attorney Øystein Storrvik, withdrew the request for transfer to mandatory mental health care when the case went to court.

Lindén admitted to having committed the murder, but at the same time explained that she was psychotic at the time of the crime. In court, he recounted how he heard voices and had been intoxicated in the days leading up to the murder.

– I heard the voices in my head. They said I had to put a plastic bag on his head and put him to sleep. He was going to lose consciousness, the 22-year-old Swede said.

The experts also stated in court that Lindén was psychotic at the time of the murder.

– After these three days in court, we have changed our conclusion, which was originally that he was not psychotic. The reason is that we had strong doubts when we reached our first conclusion. In addition, we look at the development of the disease during treatment, and its explanation of hallucinations, paranoidity and that there are long periods that you do not remember, said the experts, who also stated that there has been an improvement in Lindén during treatment that received after arrest.

Yet Paltto must have managed to rip the bag off. After this, Lindén is said to have threatened him again with a knife. According to the defendant, the 24-year-old tried to take the knife from him. Seconds later, the fatal thing happened.

– I think I stabbed him five times with the knife, but I passed out. He was lying on the floor when I left the apartment, defendant Lindén said of the murder.

The verdict establishes that the murder was carried out with more than 44 or 45 stab wounds. Shortly after, the then 20-year-old Swede began his flight across Europe.

He is still accused of having committed a murder in Belgium while on the run. What happens next in that case will now quickly become an issue, according to his advocate.

– As soon as this verdict is final, it will come out. But I haven’t heard anything yet, Storrvik tells Dagbladet.
