Police informed the AP news agency that it is a “very active situation” at the Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, outside of Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes that multiple people have been shot inside the mall. BNO News advises that it must be at least five people.
The incident began just before 3 p.m. local time on Friday afternoon.
Police are said to have been quick to ask mall employees to notify customers through the loudspeaker system that they had to request coverage.
Fox6 and BNO News report that the shooting took place in or next to Macy’s department store, which is located at the end of the mall.
Wauwatosa rapporteur Dennis McBride tells ABC News that while there are several injuries, no one should be life-threatening.
I heard a lot of shots
Several witnesses tell various US media that they have heard a dozen shots.
WISN interviewed a woman who has barricaded herself inside the mall. She says she heard 10 to 15 shots, then went silent.
He tells from his hiding place that he sees the police walking through the mall, looking for the perpetrator.
People declared in the first emergency messages to the police that it could be a white man in a gray hoodie.
Another witness told WISN that he initially thought it was the outbreak of a firework. But after 8-12 shots were fired, everyone around him started running.
A third witness told Reuters that he saw a person fall to the ground after being shot.
– I’m shocked. I was so scared. There were several shots, one after another. At first we thought they were things that fell off, because that’s how it looked. But then I saw a person walking on the ground. I saw my head fall and I heard one shot after another, the woman says.
– People started screaming. He was standing at the counter of a store. I ducked down, but then I heard everyone keep yelling and running out of the place. I just thought “I have to go, I have to go.” I ran out the door, the woman says.
I don’t know how many were shot
The number of possible victims is unknown, but photos from the site have shown that at least five people have been transported by ambulances.
According to the MIwaukee Journal Sentinel, the first police officer to arrive at the scene reported at least two people with gunshot wounds.
The wounded must have been transported away from the northernmost part of Macy’s.
The medical examiners office has not been contacted, which may indicate that no one has died.
The perpetrator not caught
According to BNO News, both the mall and the neighborhood schools were immediately closed and police began searching for the perpetrator.
The perpetrator has yet to be detained and police tell ABC News that they do not know if the person is still inside the mall or has left.
There will be more than 160 stores in the mall. Everyone is closed now.
The police have announced a press conference at 5:45 pm local time.
