The municipality of Oslo now asks people to be careful along the Akerselva. This is because the flow of water on Monday increased even more.

The Water and Sewerage Authority now releases 20,000 liters of water (20 cubic meters) per second from Maridalsvannet.

– This is due to a large amount of rainfall and large influxes. The situation is continuously evaluated, a lot of rainfall is still expected in the coming days.

Write to communications manager Kjetil Bjørnsrud of the Oslo municipality water and sewerage department in an email to Aftenposten.

13 times more water

Before the rain of late September and early October, the water flow in the river was only 1.5 cubic meters per second.

In mid-October, the water flow increased up to ten times, 15 cubic meters. The latest increase means that 13 times more water is now flowing into the Akerselva than normal.

The warning to the people is clear:

– There are great forces at work. It is important that both adults and children exercise caution when going down into the water along the river.

The explanation for why more water is now being poured into the river can be found in this October 15 article.

However, the Akerselva can take more water than now. During the floods, the flow of water was up to 43 cubic meters per second, but then it caused damage.

In the 19th century, things got even wilder. The record flood was on November 15, 1877. At the time, the water flow was more than 60 cubic meters, according to an article on Akerselva’s friends website.
