Students in upper secondary schools and elementary schools across the country demand that exams be canceled. 2020 has been too turbulent and unpredictable a year.
– This is a special year, there has been a lot of stress with homeschooling, explains the leader of the Student Organization in Trøndelag, Helena Lund Blostrupsen (18).
– The quality of teaching has deteriorated, many of the students tell us, says Helena, who is in her third year at Charlottenlund Upper Secondary School.
The campaign at underskrift.no writes that exams should be canceled because “This is a year in which we need more than ever predictability, flexibility and space for personalized training. So we think we should cancel the exam, so that we let the schools complete the teaching we learn the most from, not the one that prepares us for the exam. “
The organization wants the exam to be canceled for all stages of upper secondary school and for the tenth grade in upper secondary school.
More than 50,000 protest
– Many colleagues tell us that the follow-up is not close enough, those who have to be at home for various reasons say that they do not receive the follow-up they need.
Helena says that most of the comments are that communication with teachers is not at all of the same quality as in a normal year.
The student organization directs its appeal to the government, the Directorate of Education and the Ministry of Education. And they claim, according to Nordre Aker Budstikke, that they have the Oslo directors on the team.
The councilor for education and knowledge in the capital, Inga Marte Thorkildsen, tells the newspaper that she is in dialogue with the directors about the exam. And that an initiative can emerge from there in a short time.
– I think almost all the directors in Oslo want to cancel the exam, says Thorkildsen to Nordre Aker Budstikke.
Education Minister Guri Melby tells Adresseavisen that primary and secondary school students should prepare for exams in the spring.
According to the newspaper, the minister believes that there are no objective findings that indicate that the school level is lower this fall compared to last year.
Is the canceled exam a loss to students?
– But if you pass it, won’t the absence of exams be a loss for students, such as those who finish primary and secondary school?
– In such an extraordinary situation we will not make this a question of whether the exam is a good tool or not, Helena answers.
– In such an exceptional year, it’s about keeping a different approach when it comes to learning, you think. You have to learn what you have to learn, but now you have to give teachers as soon as possible a clear signal that they must change teaching to accommodate this abnormal year.
The most important thing is to get a fair evaluation at the end of the year, and then grades are the way to go rather than an exam, the Student Organization believes.
