The population in Norway increased by 9,800 people in the third quarter and there are now 5,384,576 people living in Norway, reports Statistics Norway (SSB).

Immigration in the third quarter increased after it was very low in the second quarter, but the majority of Norwegian citizens returned to Norway.

A total of 530 more Norwegian citizens returned in the third quarter, which is related to the fact that far fewer citizens are moving from Norway, while the number of those returning is more normal.

– It is not unreasonable to think that the corona pandemic has had a voice in this unusual pattern, writes Statistics Norway on the figures.

After the Norwegian citizens, most of the Polish, Swedish and Danish citizens have moved to Norway. Immigration figures among the largest groups returned to a more normal level in the third quarter than in previous years, when they were unusually low.

So far, Statistics Norway cannot say anything about whether the corona outbreak has had any effect on birth rates in this country. 14,100 children were born in the third trimester and this is somewhat lower than before.

The number of 9,700 deaths is not particularly high or low, but at the same level as in the second quarter, when Statistics Norway did not detect any particular excess mortality during the pandemic.
