An-Katrin Eikefjord, Senior Advisor in the section on Foreign Substances and EEE, tells Dinside that morphine has an acute effect on the central nervous system and also on its development.

– Animal experiments also show that long-term exposure can have a negative effect on reproductive ability, he says.

When it comes to limit values in food, Eikefjord says that as of today it is not regulated in the EU / EEA.

However, the issue of setting limit values for morphine in poppy seeds has been debated in the EU for a long time, and work is now being done on a proposal for limit values for morphine in poppy seeds sold to the EU. consumers of 20 mg / kg and in baked products containing poppy seeds of 1.5 mg / kg.
