Mobile, Telenor | Price War Way: New Subscriptions Smash Competitor

A solid price difference: here are the new prices.

On Monday, Telia launched a series of new mobile broadband subscriptions. The special thing is that the subscriptions set the limit of computer use extremely high, at a price well below what the market leader Telenor offers.

Mobile broadband can be used across multiple devices, for example a mobile, tablet or PC, and the amount can be shared across multiple devices. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for use in country houses or the like outside the home.

Reduces the price drastically

The new Telia subscriptions are for customers who need a large data consumption outside the home, at a price well below the Telenor price. Slightly simplified, the prices look like this:

Mobile broadband: Telenor vs. Telia

The amount of data Telia Telenor
50 GB 499 549
100 GB 549 799
200 GB X 999
250 GB 799
500 GB 999

The table shows the amount of data and the price per month. In the Telia model, you don’t pay for excess data, but the transfer speed slows when the limit is crossed.

As the table shows, Telia subscriptions are much cheaper. A 100GB quota will probably last a long time for many, and here the price difference is 250 crowns per month. You also get 150 percent more data on Telia (500GB vs. 200GB) for the same price, compared to Telenor.

– We are experiencing high demand for mobile broadband and our customers are actively using the product, whether at home, on the move or in the cabin, says Pål Rune Kaalen, director of the private market at Telia Norway.

– Not so important

But developments in the market have meant that mobile broadband subscriptions are now of little importance, Telenor believes.

– For Telenor, it applies that after the introduction of Next subscriptions recently, our customers now offer unlimited data at a fixed monthly price. This has led to our customers demanding less mobile broadband, as our mobile subscriptions for the vast majority now cover this need. Most people don’t need a subscription, says communications manager Anders Krokan at Telenor Norway.

On the other hand, he believes that in the framework of a modernization of the fixed network, the mobile network with Home Broadband Mobile, or Wireless Broadband, can work as a better offer for customers than the old-fashioned solution of copper over fixed network broadband. .

– This development will be reinforced with the introduction of 5G. We have not considered changes in mobile broadband subscriptions now, but as always we consider developments in customer needs and offerings in the market, says Krokan.

Unlimited – almost

Less than a year ago, Telenor denied that there was a need in Norway for mobile subscriptions with unlimited data usage.

In the fall of 2019, the company took a total of NOK 799 for 60 GB, which was then the maximum limit, while Swedish and Danish mobile customers could enjoy strong competition to offer mobile subscriptions with free data usage.

That has changed since then. A regular mobile subscription with free data usage now costs 549 kr, but over 100 GB the speed drops to 3 Mbit / s for the rest of the month, unless you want to shell out 200 kr for free speed anyway. Telia charges NOK 499 per month for a similar subscription.
