The main rescue center was notified of the drifting boat just before 2pm this afternoon.

When a man was reported missing shortly after 4 p.m., the Main Rescue Center launched a full rescue operation.

Eirik Walle of the Main Rescue Center says there was no reason to suspect when the ship was first discovered.

– The boat lacked an engine and the oars were in storage. Only when one person was reported missing did we put two and two together, Walle says.

I went on a fishing trip

The boat that was found adrift must be lost, police say.

– The man is said to have been fishing and working on some pots, says Tatjana Knappen in the West Police District.

The search operation is led by the Main Rescue Center. Police are on the scene along with a rescue boat, an air ambulance, a fire department and a helicopter from the Main Rescue Center.

– In addition to searches on the beach, we now start with searches on land using the rescue dogs of the Red Cross and Norway.

Early Thursday afternoon, divers from Måløy were waiting to begin a search at sea.

– Darkness is a challenge

Norwegian rescue dogs arrived at the scene around 7 pm to assist in the search.

Helene Høiset Sæterdal at Norwegian Rescue Dogs says they are concentrating on searches along the coast.

– It’s a large area. We search both sides of the strait.

They are at the scene with three dogs.

– The weather is nice and calm, so the search conditions are good. But it’s clear that darkness is a challenge, says Sæterdal.

Has several theories

The button in the West Police District indicates that the man they are looking for is in his 30s. He won’t go into detail about when he was last seen and by whom.

– We have a series of theories from which we work without going into details. A lot of intelligence work has been done.

Shortly before 8:30 on Thursday night, the search is still going on, despite the darkness.

– We carry out continuous evaluations on its duration. We will continue for so long, even after dark, says Knappen.
