It can have serious consequences for your home.
– Turns out it’s a small year for rodents in eastern Norway, but it’s probably a regional phenomenon, says Natural History Museum zoologist Petter Bøckman.
However, this does not mean that museum years cannot happen in other parts of the country, but not this year. The interior is a place that is often affected by this.
– Such phenomena often occur where conditions are a bit calm. There are more predators and less snow on the coast, so we don’t have the same population bursts, says Bøckman.
– As the head enters, the body slides back
These days, houses and cabins in eastern Norway can be more disturbed by various of our species of mice, such as wood mice, climbing mice, and field mice.
Mice especially enter the house in the holes of the transition from the foundation to the siding and especially in the corners of the house. Of course, they can also slide on porch doors and open windows, but especially looking for holes and cracks.
– The most important thing you can do to prevent mice from entering the house is to seal the house for small cracks, says Arnulf Soleng, principal investigator in the pest control section of the National Institute of Public Health.
– We are talking about very small openings, up to six millimeter cracks. As the mouse’s head enters, the rest of the body slides in, he says.

This is how you prevent mice from entering the house and cabin
The best and safest way to prevent mice from entering your home is to seal mouse entry doors such as holes and cracks.
– It doesn’t have to be a big job to secure the house against mice, but in some cases there may be a number of holes that need to be sealed and then it takes time. There are, among other things, mouse brushes, which look like a large bottle brush that is placed between the siding and the foundation wall, and then the mouse does not enter, says Soleng.
If you find it difficult to find holes and cracks in your home, she advises you to seek the help of a pest control company that can show you and can help seal them as well.
When the year of the mouse rolls around, it’s nice to spend the summer stamping out potential mouse entries. If you start closing holes now, it may already be too late.
– Then you can seal the mouse inside, and then they can die in construction and leave a smell.

You must avoid this aggravation
One very important thing to do to prevent mice from entering the house is to eliminate food sources that attract mice and rats.
– Basically, small rodents eat seeds. Feeding the birds seeds is the worst and can ensure that you not only get visits from mice, but it can also cause problems with rats if you live in urban areas, says zoologist Bøckman.
For this reason, among other things, FHI recommends that if you are going to feed small birds, you place seeds and bird food a good distance from the house, and preferably in a forest area close to the house.
Once you’ve brought the mouse into the house or cabin, it doesn’t turn off until it’s spring. They may sneak around to find food, but then quickly return.
– If you got them, you almost have to catch them. The good news is that these wild Norwegian mice are very curious, and then easy to catch in mousetraps – it’s a sure winner, says Soleng at FHI.
How to find out that you have mice at home
– How do you discover for the first time that a mouse has entered a house or cabin?
– He wonders where they come in. If you walk straight into the living room, you will find feces and they have gnawed on things like candles and fruits that are in front, says Soleng.
In the vast majority of cases, they are in the building and not in the living room.
– If they are inside the construction, like the walls, for example, it could be that you hear legs, that they run or climb the walls, he continues.
– Then there are some that start to smell when the mice die. Some people die naturally and you will smell a sweet, rotten smell, says Soleng.
Norwegian mice don’t breed indoors, they only overwinter.
– But few people want them, because they can do great damage, and if it is a year of mice, there may be many mice that want to enter the house and cabin, says Soleng.

May cause water leakage and fire.
Mice teeth grow and grow, so they must be sharpened by biting into them. This can have serious consequences.
– They tend to gnaw on all furniture, from furniture to clothes, but they can also gnaw, for example, water pipes and cables. In the worst case, there may be a fire or water damage, says Soleng.
In addition, the mouse can damage the insulation you have on the walls and ceiling, and ensure that there are cold bridges.
One thing many people fear is that mice can cause disease.
Soleng says that climbing mice can transmit the mouse infestation from Narvik and the south, and north of Narvik it is most likely red mice that will.
To avoid being infected by a virus that the mouse can carry with it, it is very important not to sweep up the mouse droppings, because then the virus can swirl with the dust.
Mouse droppings should be removed with a damp cloth, and you can wear gloves and a bandage when doing so, to be safe.

Therefore, it is the year of museums in 2020.
The reason museum years occur is because several factors attack at the same time.
– It must have been a nice layer of snow last winter for many mice to survive the winter and take care of the heat and rain in early summer for food, says Petter Bøckman.
– Also, there should not be too many mice and insects that have grazed on the vegetation in previous years. When plants are grazed a lot, they produce anti-grazing substances that make it difficult for mice to digest, he says, adding:
– When there are many factors of this type at the same time, the combination means that you get an explosion of mice, he continues.
