The Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow alert warning about Nordland, Troms and the coastal and fjord regions in Finnmark.

According to the warning, snow will settle on the roads of the most intense cities, both in the lowlands and in the mountains.

– Overnight to Monday, it will increase with construction activity across northern Norway. It has also snowed this weekend, but now there is also a strong northwest wind. A breeze will blow for most along the coast, says surveillance meteorologist Pernille Borander.

At most, you can get 10 to 20 centimeters of snow in one day.

People in the north have already been exposed to fresh snow in May for a few days. But in southern Norway, the snow that arrived on Sunday morning was probably a little more surprising.

Difficult driving conditions

A yellow hazard warning is used for a moderately hazardous situation, which can cause local damage.

The threshold for sending snow warnings is lower in the spring and summer months as many have switched to summer tires.

– Although it is not yet the great spring feeling here in the north, many have changed the tires. So it is important to leave the car in the snow if there is snow on the ground. The period we are entering now is cool, and then it is fast for snow to stay on the ground longer than we have been used to in the past few days.

According to the notice, you must calculate the additional time for transportation and driving. In addition to using the correct tires and driving according to the conditions.

Snowfox will also provide reduced visibility and the possibility of column driving and closed roads.

– West Finnmark receives the highest amount of wind on Monday night, facing the breeze and the storm. We currently do not have a wind gust warning there, but local wind gusts may occur, Borander says.

A yellow snow warning has also been issued in Sogn and Fjordane, Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag.

May 17 weather

When it comes to the weather for National Day in the north, forecasts are currently uncertain.

– We have quite certain forecasts until Friday, but it will be for the weekend of May 17.

According to the meteorologist, Finnmark will likely get the best weather in the region on May 17. In Troms and Nordland there are more possibilities of rain.

– As it seems now, there will be quite strong low pressure west of us. We probably have to hope that there aren’t as many places up north in bad weather, but that may change as we get closer to the next weekend, says Pernille Borander.

– The positive that we can take with us is that it is more likely to rain in the form of sleet and rain, not sleet and snow.

What is certain is that the celebration will be a little different than what we are used to due to the crown.

– If it is a May 17 we can withstand the rain and the wind, then it is this year. So we should look forward to next year and invest in the sun and walk on the trains.
