Meling played big for Norway. Now he is praised by Lagerbäck.

Meling was one of the best players on his team against Romania. He passed the ball into Alexander Sørloth’s goal.

The other three Norwegian goals came from Erling Braut Haaland.

– We players relate to the players that Lars (Lagerbäck) and Perry (Per Joar Hansen) eliminate, but they probably all have a “drive” to join. In football, things change quickly. There are several paths to the national team. Not everyone needs to be a Martin Ødegaard or Erling Braut Haaland, Meling said at a news conference Monday.

On Friday this week, Melings Nimes will play Paris Saint-Germain, just two days after the national league deal against Northern Ireland ends.

– We can only get the best of him, but perhaps it is a bit strange that the match was added then, especially since France also plays on Wednesday at 20.45, said Meling.

Rested

Haitam Aleesami has been the first choice as a left back for a long time with Lars Lagerbäck. He had a brutal night against Serbia in the repeat of the European Championship on Thursday and was not even in the squad on Sunday.

Meling, 25, is up in 13 A-national games. Three of them arrived in 2019 and 2020.

– Birger is getting closer and closer to a starting point. He doesn’t give up and he’s also a smart kid, said national team manager Lagerbäck.

Aleesami also did not fully train on Monday. Lagerbäck noted that time may be tight for him.

– There is a clear question mark around them (Aleesami and Stefan Johansen) considering if they can play.

Success

Meling switched from Rosenborg to French Nimes this summer. The transfer fee is said to have been around NOK 10 million, and the purchase has already been called “a warp” in France.

“It’s great when you travel to a good, tough league and you feel like you have something to do and perform,” Meling said of the move.

Norway will face Northern Ireland in the UEFA national league on Wednesday. Norway is one point (six) with Austria at the top of the table after three games.

After the meeting with the Northern Ireland, Norway will play away against Romania (November 15) and Austria (November 18) at the end of the group. They are the last A-national matches of the year.
