Mayor: – We feel we have the outbreak under control

On Sunday afternoon, Mayor Hanne Opdan in Nordre Follo stated that eleven new cases of the mutated British coronavirus had been detected.

On Monday morning, he eagerly awaits 250 new test results.

– We are waiting for answers to all these tests in the twig on Monday morning. Naturally, we are very excited about these results. But we fear and hope that there will be more positive tests with that mutant, Opdan tells TV 2.

She says that everyone who is waiting for the test results is now in quarantine.

– What we know as of now is that we have 74 cases of infection associated with this outbreak and we experience that the outbreak is controlled, says the mayor.

Test results coming from the National Institute of Public Health on Monday will tell if there are even more infected with the mutated coronavirus. So far, 17 of the 74 infected by the outbreak have been affected.

Deputy Health Director Espen Rostrup Nakstad says it is positive that Nordre Follo feels they have the outbreak under control.

– Now it is like this right now that it seems that the infection is not spreading in Nordre Follo. But what we still do not have control over is how many of these cases are mutated viruses or not. Over time, we will get better and better responses, Nakstad tells TV 2.

– I laughed

On Sunday, Opdan said the situation in the municipality was dire.

– That was what we feared. We have been diagnosed with eleven new cases of the British variant of the virus since yesterday. That was what we were afraid of coming, but for a long time we hoped would not happen, Opdan said at the time.

– How does the population take the new and stricter measures?

– It is clear that they are sorry that now they have to live under such strict and intrusive measures. But I feel like they understand and want to help prevent the virus from spreading in our area or across the country, says the mayor.

On Thursday last week, Nordre Follo was opened for children and young people under the age of 13 to start training indoors again. But after that decision, it was only a few hours before the situation was completely different.

– This shows how quickly things happen, so now we must all be very careful in the coming days, he says.

The municipality of Nordre Follo has asked to be given priority in the vaccine queue after the big outbreak.

– We now express a strong desire that our municipality have priority in vaccination. It is especially important that vulnerable groups in our municipality rank higher on the priority list, says Opdan.

It will not be prioritized

But despite the outbreak of the English mutated virus variant and high infection pressure, the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) claims that neither Oslo nor Nordre-Follo end up further down the vaccine queue.

– FHI does not currently change the recommendations, said Director Camilla Stoltenberg at FHI.

– But we assess the pressure of the infection in Oslo and the surrounding municipalities against municipalities in the rest of the country, Stoltenberg said Sunday night.

He stressed that the extent of the mutated variant infection is currently unknown and that access to vaccines is limited.

– We will soon have a better picture of the prevalence in Oslo and the surrounding municipalities. Then we can assess whether the changes are appropriate, Stoltenberg said.
