– May be in good shape one day, while the next day the resident is dead

– We registered the first case of infection in the nursing home on November 4. That was eleven days ago, says Eidsvoll municipal chief physician Carl Magnus Jensen.

Since then, 21 residents and 18 employees have been diagnosed with the infection. On Sunday, Jensen also confirmed that another resident of the nursing home died of the virus.

This is the nursing home’s fourth death since Friday.

– The figures show that the situation becomes terribly dire when the infection spreads in a nursing home, says Jensen.

– We have had good routines

Richard Skaar Thorsrud is the Managing Director of Skaar sorg AS, the company that owns Villa Skaar Valstad. He says the nursing home has followed strict infection control routines at all times.

The infection is increasing considerably in Norway: – We are working on new advice and measures.

– I have been asked if there is something we could have done differently. But this is not the result of someone breaking routines. We can’t point to anyone. No one can be blamed because everyone has done what they should.

To this day, no one yet knows how the infection spread in the hospital.

– It started with an employee who called the manager of the nursing home and told him she was feeling ugly before the night shift. The person was told to stay home and get tested, says Skaar Thorsrud.

Nakstad: – The situation may be more dramatic than we think

The test was positive.

All residents and staff of the home were assessed the same day. It turned out that 17 other people in the nursing home were also infected, all with mild illnesses.

– Therefore, it is also difficult to know where the infection comes from, says Municipal Chief Jensen.

– Desperate situation

Skaar Thorsrud says that the residents of the house are closely followed.

– What has been particularly challenging is that the course of the disease changes rapidly. We have a doctor who checks on residents every day. One day a resident may be healthy and in good shape, while the next day the resident is dead.

– What do you want to tell family members?

– This is terrible and the worst thing that could have happened. So we have to take care of the relatives, but at the same time also remember the employees. Especially those who are in quarantine at home, after having been diagnosed with the virus.

– It is important to tell employees that they are not to blame for this, says Skaar Thorsrud.

– is demanding

Kristine Borghagen is a nurse and shop steward at Villa Skaar Valstad. She herself has not been infected with the virus, but several of her colleagues have.

– It is a tough and demanding situation. Although we have followed the routines, the infection has quietly arrived, Borghagen tells TV 2.

He also believes that residents may notice that employees are affected by the situation.

– Even those who have dementia and do not fully understand why they are at home can probably notice that this affects us employees.

– But at the same time, I feel that we do what we can so that patients still have the best they can, says the nurse.
