According to the Granavold platform, the government has adopted a new strategy for picnic areas. Today, there are 700 places that will be reduced to 150 main rest areas of much better level along the national highways. According to Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide, they will be available for all types of vehicles throughout the year.

– Many have experienced the need to go to the bathroom or a 15-minute nap on trips across the country. There will be a maximum of one hour of travel between the large rest areas, says the Minister of Transport and Communications in a press release.

Bathrooms, outdoor furniture, and waste management will be minimal requirements, while some picnic areas will be even better equipped.

– To get the most out of your money, we’ve advocated that minimum requirements be the primary rule for standard options. You should only choose improved standards where there is a lot of traffic and this goes a long way for the money we spend, says Hareide.

At the same time, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration will facilitate the establishment of electric car chargers, but it will be private actors who will have to build the charging stations themselves. This is how the government plans to achieve its goal of halving emissions from the transportation sector.
