Danny Murphy believes that Solskjær’s choice to play with both Pogba and Bruno Fernandes is the reason Manchester United have been so bad on defense.
Manchester United claimed their first Premier League win of the season on Saturday after losing their opener 3-1 to Crystal Palace. But in the 3-2 game against United, Solskjær’s side was far from convincing.
Brighton hit United’s goalposts five times during the match, and England’s south coast team created major problems for United’s defense throughout the match. Although it ended in victory and three points for “Los Diablos Rojos”, several experts believed that United were lucky to emerge victorious from the dramatic battle.
– A great decision to make
Former soccer player and now soccer expert Danny Murphy believes Solskjær’s defensive woes stem from the choice to play with two star players at the same time in midfield.

– Ole Gunnar Solskjær has a big decision to make because Manchester United will continue to concede goals if he continues to play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes at the same time in the starting lineup, Murphy writes in a comment in the Daily Mail.
Murphy thinks they are fantastic creative players, but that is not enough.
– None of them good enough defensively to play together in a midfield trio. His shortcomings put Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw under enormous pressure because they were constantly caught between Brighton’s wingers and forwards, he writes.
– Does not detect dangers
Murphy is compared to Liverpool, where he believes Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson can attack because they are secured defensively by Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum from midfield.
But Murphy doesn’t think the defensive problems stem from the fact that Fernandes or Pogba are too lazy, they just aren’t good enough defensively.
– They do not detect or perceive dangers quickly enough. When they realize they need to go back, it’s too late, think.

– It doesn’t look good
The former Liverpool player believes van de Beek can solve some of United’s midfield problems, but until he’s in proper form, Murphy believes the choice of who will start with Pogba and Fernandes is quite simple.
– In recent months, I would say that Bruno has had more offensive influence than Pogba, so I don’t know what he does with the Frenchman, who has been substituted for just over an hour in United’s two Premier League games.
Murphy adds that the fact that Pogba tested positive for Covid-19 in the run-up to the season may have influenced his form. But the way he’s performed so far, he doesn’t think he’s good enough.
– Right now it seems to be far from good enough and Solskjær will have a lot to think about as United have conceded five goals in total against Crystal Palace and Brighton, Murphy emphasizes.
In the next round of the Premier League, Manchester United will face Tottenham at home at Old Trafford.
