The television expert does not believe that a new manager will improve Manchester United overnight, instead pointing to what he describes as “utterly desperate management” from above.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær and his Manchester United made a ruckus against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday night and thus the debate about the Norwegian’s future as the club’s manager has completely flared up again.

With the English sportsbooks, Solskjær is now the favorite to become the next Premier League manager to be fired, just two years after landing the United job.
It probably doesn’t help the 47-year-old’s case that Mauricio Pochettino is already available on the market and has given signs that he’s ready to take on a new job. On Thursday afternoon, the local Manchester Evening Standard newspaper reported that United had contacted the Argentine with a view to taking over the club.

Don’t think Solskjær gets fired
Solskjær’s future at United was also a topic in Vsport’s studio after Wednesday’s game. A poor result against Everton in the Premier League this weekend will likely put even more pressure on the former goal hunter, but expert Jan Åge Fjørtoft believes it is far in the heart of Manchester United management to ditch Solskjær, a legend in the club. Fjørtoft commented on this before the news about Pochettino appeared in the local newspaper.
– If you think about the dismissal of Ole Gunnar, I don’t think it will happen, said Fjørtoft in the studio and addressed the host Daniel Høglund.
– It’s because Ed Woodward (United manager) has decided that he will now have a Manchester United legend for as long as possible. I’ve said all the time that I don’t think United will kick Solskjær until it’s completely impossible and we’re not there yet.

However, reports by the well-informed Samuel Luckhurst in the local newspaper may indicate that United management still believes it has reached that point. Sky Sports, for its part, believes like Fjørtoft and announces on Thursday afternoon that United is ready to continue supporting the Norwegian in his coaching role.
Despite a weak opening in the league game, Solskjær has led United to strong victories over PSG and RB Leipzig this season. The 47-year-old also led the club to third place in the Premier League last season and provided that match in the Champions League.
– What is happening now is that the environment is creating pressure, it is the English press, it is the spectators and fans who now have to express themselves on all kinds of social networks, said the expert.
– A violent game behind the scenes.
Fjørtoft notes, however, that a lot is happening behind the scenes now in and around United, as a result of weak results recently.
– What we need to keep in mind, because there is often a debate here in Norway about how long Ole Gunnar will be in office, we want a Norwegian to lead Manchester United, but it is a game around such an attractive job. It’s a fierce game in and around the scenes at Manchester United now, from Pochettino and the agents who want to sell him.
– Then Woodward may think that when the pressure becomes too great, because the criticism is also going to him, he can say: So I sacrifice a coach and get a new coach, said Fjørtoft.

The former Swindon striker continues to believe that the coach is not Manchester United’s main problem.
– Manchester United do not improve just by changing managers. Pochettino may be better at something and worse at something than Ole Gunnar Solskjær, but United must do something with the whole setup in and around the whole team. We’ve been saying this for months, and they must if Manchester United want to get back to where they dream of being.
Completely desperate management
In the study, it was noted that United players sometimes seem to be under-motivated and there is a limit to what Solskjær can do about it.
– It is always the coach who is to blame in the end. Good management must look behind the results and what worries me at Manchester United is that you have a completely desperate management. Completely desperate in terms of recruiting, building the academy, etc. Manchester United is not good at the moment. It has been declining for many years, Fjørtoft thought.

Colleague expert Morten Langli also notes that Pochettino is now lurking behind the scenes and believes that this makes working conditions even more difficult for the United manager.
– One thing that will make it difficult for Solskjær is that Pochettino is free on the market. He’s on the road as Manchester United performs so variably, from beating PSG, beating Leipzig, playing tame performances against Chelsea and Arsenal at home and so far to slip away in Istanbul and perform extremely poorly.
– Pochettino was invited to Sky Sports Monday night and says directly that he is ready to start working again, Langli said.
Solskjær declined to comment
The Argentine led Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019, where there was a final loss to Liverpool in Madrid. The 48-year-old also has experience managing clubs like Southampton and Espanyol.
As a player, Pochettino had stints at, among others, PSG and Espanyol.
– Pochettino won many fans during the period at Southampton and not least what he did at Tottenham, although without winning titles, which were used against him.

After the defeat in Istanbul on Wednesday night, Solskjær himself was asked about his future as Manchester United manager. He replied the following:
– I refrain from commenting on such things. Of course, it is early in the season and opinions will always be there. One must be strong. The club hired me to do a job and I do the best I can with my support staff.
