A Manchester United midfield made up of van de Beek, Fernandes and Pogba will likely bring water to many United fans. But not everyone thinks it would have been a good choice for Solskjær.
Manchester United had the worst possible start to the season when they lost the first Premier League game 3-1 to Crystal Palace. After the game, Solskjær had to endure much criticism.
TV 2 soccer expert Simen Stamsø Møller stated the following in the studio after the nightmarish start of the season.
– I have the feeling that we have seen the lowest level of United, again.
– A risk not worth taking
But on Saturday afternoon, Solskjær and his crew have a chance to fight back. So Brighton is waiting away from home, and it may be time for United’s three midfield stars to start together for the first time.
Solskjær has spoken of the possibility of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes joining this summer’s new signing Donny van de Beek in midfield. The Norwegian coach insists that “good players can play well together.”
– Ole Gunnar Solkskjær is confident that his top three midfielders can play together, but using them all at the same time is a risk not worth taking, Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall writes in a comment.
If Solskjær decides to play with a trio of midfielders made up of van de Beek, Fernandes and Pogba, Marshall is concerned that he will go beyond defense.
– Seeing that trio on the same team will certainly create engagement, but it should also raise concern. Solskjær knows that throwing good players onto the field and watching them play is not the answer. Good players have an “advantage,” but if the opponent is better organized or better tactically, he can zero it out quickly, he writes.
– Too early
Marshall also believes it will be too early to see the three midfielders together, and believes they should have time to train to develop relationships. He thinks it’s safer to go for a defensive midfielder in midfield, like Nemanja Matic.
– Right now it is too early to consider all three as United’s midfield, writes the journalist.
The Manchester Evening News reporter also notes that it is rare to see Liverpool and Manchester City play without a defensive midfielder, with Fabinho and Rodri or Fernandinho respectively being used in the roles of the aforementioned clubs.
– They may play two 8s instead of a deeper midfielder, but Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have seen the value of a disciplined player in midfield.
Warns
Marshall believes Solskjær should do the same, even though he plans to develop the style of play into a more ball-possessing style. Marshall believes there are signs of more aggressive, ball-possession football to be seen, as well as good press play.
– But playing that way means that you will be vulnerable on defense when attacking or pushing. Such a style means committing to the future, both with and without the ball. If you lose the ball or the opponent pushes better than you, you will be exposed, warns the journalist.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Manchester United meet Brighton on Saturday at 1.30pm. Brighton has one defeat and one victory so far this season in the Premier League.
