Manchester United are one step closer to promotion to the Champions League after beating Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1.
MANCHESTER UNITED – ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR 4-1:
Led by a fiery Bruno Fernandes, United went straight to the throat of the great Turkish team. Before the game clock struck 20 minutes, the 26-year-old had already thrown two goals, with the first goal being a real cannonball.
Shortly after, Marcus Rashford increased from the penalty spot, before Daniel James set the score at 4-1 just before the end.
Fernandes, who is usually United’s penalty taker, explains in an interview with BT Sport after the game why Rashford ended up taking the penalty, when in fact he could have become a hat trick hero.
– Of course all players want to score a hat trick, but after the Premier League game I told Rashy that he should take the next one. I remembered him, also because he is one of the top scorers in the Champions League. I thought it would be important for him to give him confidence, but no matter who takes the penalties, the most important thing is to score, says the Portuguese.
Deniz Türüc reduced the lead to 3 – 1 with a penalty cannon ball. It looked as if the ball had gone wide on tackle, but he is claiming it!

Reacted to Wan-Bissaka
Despite strong performances ahead on the field, United also lost to the visiting team with some good opportunities, something Aaron Wan-Bissaka should have heard from his Norwegian coach, after Demba Ba had a good chance at the end of The first half.
– Solskjær was much more forward and demanded more than usual, despite United overtaking. I just gave Wan-Bissaka a proper scolding sermon, Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst wrote on Twitter.
– Ole Gunnar Solskjær roared after Aaron Wan-Bissaka after Demba Ba’s opportunity, tweeted PA reporter Simon Peach.

Right at the head
United took control of the game immediately and after two minutes Rashford had gigantic opportunities to send the hosts to the lead. After passing through two or three players, the forward fired, but the attempt went straight to goalkeeper Mert Günük. He then recovered the ball before the defense was finally cleared.
Five minutes later, it was United’s great player, Bruno Fernandes, who put the hosts ahead. The Portuguese kicked the ball out at 18 meters after a corner kick, and threw the ball into the net with a half volley.
And before 20 minutes were up, Fernandes was back in front. Günok completely missed Alex Telles’ post, and then the midfield star got an easy job putting in his second for the night.
Ten minutes later, it was Rashford’s turn to create trouble for the visiting team. The 23-year-old played from his right wing position, before Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo fouled him inside the penalty area. The striker went ahead and sent Günok down the wrong path.
Messy second round
The second half was marked by several substitutions along the way, but the quarter before the end, Istanbul Basakshehir got a reduction.
Türüc had the opportunity to take a free kick from just over 25 meters, and David de Gea simply failed to evade the 27-year-old’s attempt.
The Turks continued to be dangerous up front towards the end of the match after sloppy defensive play by the hosts, something that TV 2 commentator Øyvind Alsaker also pointed out just before the end.
– There is something terribly arrhythmic about this United team after the break, Alsaker said.
United still managed to take the victory and scored a goal just before the end of Daniel James.
Therefore, they are one more step in the advance to the quarterfinals. The red jerseys now have 9 points, while PSG and RB Leipzig have 6 points each. Tonight’s visiting team remains with 3 points after the victory over United in the previous round.
