Man died after walking on ice in Nordland

The man in his 50s who crossed the ice at Alsvågvatnet in the Øksnes municipality in Nordland on Christmas Eve has been confirmed dead.

It is the Northern Norwegian University Hospital in Tromsø that confirmed to TV 2 on Thursday night that the man has died. Family members have been notified.

The police were notified of the incident at 4.15 p.m. and all emergency services were dispatched to the scene, something inaccessible.

– We were informed via AMK after close acquaintances of the man reported that he may have traversed the ice at the southern tip of Alsvågvatnet in Vesterålen, operations manager Ulf Slettan in the Nordland police district tells NTB.

Two air ambulances were dispatched to the scene, one helicopter arrived from Harstad and the other from Tromsø. The latter brought divers who examined several towers in the ice in the area.

At 19:22, the police declared that the man had been found in the water and that he was transported by air ambulance to Tromsø University Hospital.
