A 33-year-old man from Northern Ireland lost his life during a dental treatment trip to the city of Marmaris in Turkey. The man went to Turkey with two friends, where they had all scheduled an appointment with a dentist to whiten their teeth, writes The Guardian.

The three men were found unconscious in the apartment they rented during their stay on Saturday. Richard Molloy (33) was pronounced dead, and his two friends Declan Carson and Aaron Callaghan were in a coma and their health remains critical. The names have been published with the consent of the men’s relatives.

Described as healthy and fresh

Sources close to the men told The Guardian that they had been given medication to take prior to treatment and that it was after this that they were found unconscious. It is too early to say if the drug is the cause of the incident. All three men are from Belfast and were described as healthy and well.

“It is a tragedy that this can happen to three healthy young men,” Rep. John Finuance told The Guardian.

Belfast Deputy Mayor Paul McCusker is also reacting to what happened.

“The incident is concerning and has shocked the entire Ardoyne area,” McCusker told The Guardian.

Dental tourism is gaining popularity

Turkey is a popular destination for dental treatments, cosmetic surgery, and medical treatments. According to the Istanbul International Health Tourism Association, 700,000 people visited the country for treatment in 2017, and the hope is to attract 2 million health tourists by 2023.

According to Helfo, the number of reimbursements granted for dental treatments abroad has skyrocketed since the law was introduced in 2011, with Hungary being the country with the most dental tourism from Norway. Last year ABC News wrote about billionaire brothers Adolfsen who are engaged in dental tourism in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
